Portable Toilet Quantity Calculator Guide
How many portable toilets do you actually need? The answer depends on attendance, event or project duration, whether alcohol is served, gender split, and ADA requirements. This guide provides the actual industry formulas and tables used by professional event planners, general contractors, and the Portable Sanitation Association International (PSAI).
PSAI Event Formula
The Portable Sanitation Association International recommends the following unit counts for events without alcohol (4-hour duration):
- Up to 50 attendees: 1 unit
- 50-100: 2 units
- 100-250: 3 units
- 250-500: 4 units
- 500-1,000: 5-6 units
- 1,000-2,000: 8-10 units
- Larger events scale from there
For events serving alcohol, add roughly 25-35% capacity. For events longer than 4 hours, add capacity proportionally.
OSHA Construction Formula
OSHA 1926.51 requires:
- 1 unit for 1-20 workers
- 2 units for 21-40 workers
- 3 units for 41-60 workers
- 4 units for 61-80 workers
- 5 units for 81-100 workers
- 1 additional unit per 40 workers beyond 100
Adjustments and Modifiers
Adjust the base count for these factors:
- Alcohol served: +25-35% capacity
- Duration >4 hours: proportional increase
- Predominantly female attendance: +10-15%
- Camping/multi-day event: +30-50%
- High-heat conditions: +10-15%
- Hard-to-reach location (single access): +10%
Handwashing Station Ratios
One handwashing station per every 3-4 portable toilets, minimum. At any event with food service, add stations at the food-service area regardless of overall ratio.
ADA Unit Requirements
At least one ADA-accessible unit at any event open to the public, and one ADA per every 20 standard units at larger events. Construction sites need ADA units when workers with disabilities are present or the site is open to public visitors.
Worked Examples
Example 1: 150-guest wedding, 5 hours, full bar. Base = 3 units. Bar adjustment = +25%. Duration = +25%. Total = 4-5 units, or a two-stall trailer plus one deluxe unit.
Example 2: Construction site with 35 workers on a 6-month project. Base OSHA = 2 units. Add handwashing station. Weekly service standard.
Example 3: 2,000-attendee outdoor festival, 8 hours, alcohol served. Base = 8-10 units. Alcohol = +30%. Duration = +50%. Total = 15-18 units plus 4-5 handwashing stations plus 1-2 ADA units.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I underestimate attendance?
Call us before your event — we can often add units on short notice if we have inventory available. Rounding up initially costs less than rushing mid-event additions.
Do I count staff and vendors in the total?
Yes. Include staff, vendors, performers, and volunteers in your attendance count for restroom sizing purposes.
Is the OSHA formula a minimum or a target?
It's a legal minimum. For crew comfort and productivity we recommend somewhat higher ratios, especially on 10+ hour work days.
How do gender-neutral or all-single-user units affect the calculation?
All-single-user (lockable) units simplify gender accommodation — every unit serves any user. Total counts stay the same as gendered scenarios.
Can you calculate this for me?
Absolutely. Call us with event or project details and we'll calculate the exact recommended count and quote pricing on the spot.
